Another podium finish for Kennard at Thruxton

British Formula 3 ace Jonathan Kennard proved once again that he is one of the top Formula Three drivers by setting the fastest ever F3 lap around Hampshire's Thruxton circuit last weekend and racing from sixth on the grid to second in race one.

The searing 1m06.2s lap happened in Friday's practice session, ahead of Sunday's two races around the ultra high-speed track, and placed 22-year old Kennard, from Tunbridge Wells, at the top of the tree going into qualifying.

Sadly, the rising British star was unable to repeat the performance during qualifying, as he was hampered by some mechanical problems, and ended 6th  and 10th for the weekend's two races.

‘In race one I made a good start to pass Stephen Jelley, but Marko Asmer also got a good start to pass me, so I went from sixth to fifth and back again at the start,' explained Kennard.

A gutsy pass around the outside at Club Chicane saw Kennard move past championship leader, Asmer and he continued to move his way up through the field and into second on lap three.

Jonathan said: ‘I had a good battle with Sam Bird, until I made my move to get past him on the exit of the chicane, which put me into the lead.  I pulled out a huge margin over the rest but that was nullified when the safety car came out.'

At the restart, Jonathan led the field out of the chicane but his team mate Jelley, drafted past into the lead on the run to Allard.  A battle with Maro Engel meant that Kennard did not get another opportunity to challenge his team-mate and take his second win of the year.

‘It was extremely frustrating that I lost my big lead due to the safety car being released on lap 15. It is difficult to stop the following car gaining a tow from you around Thruxton so it was always going to be difficult to stay in the lead after a restart.'

Race two was a less eventful outing for Kennard, with a lack of grip in the hotter temperatures and a badly blistered front left tyre meaning he struggled to challenge the cars in front of him, finishing 12th.

Kennard's next British F3 action will be at Croft, in North Yorkshire, on September 8/9.
