Disappointing Spa finale for Champion

Newly-crowned Visma Software Formula Palmer Audi Champion Jonathan Kennard (Tunbridge Wells) ended the season in the pit lane, his first non-finish of the year, after being taken out of the final race in Spa-Francorchamps today. The 19 year-old who clinched the series here yesterday, was hit four times through the 9-lap race, before Sam Edwards, the driver who Jonathan beat to the Autumn Trophy last year, put paid to his chances of taking his fifth win of the season.

Starting from pole, which he secured by more than three seconds, Kennard made a good start off the line only to be hit by Loic Deman as the cars went through the first corner Eau Rouge, which gave Deman the lead and dropped Jonathan back into the clutches of a fast-starting Rob Jenkinson. As the cars entered Les Combe Jonathan was then hit by Jenkinson pushing him onto the grass and allowing both Jenkinson and Edwards through and relegating Jonathan to fourth.

As Jenkinson chased down and passed Deman for the lead, Jonathan made a move to get by Edwards for third but had the door firmly shut in his face. Next lap round, Jonathan dived up the inside as Edwards ran wide but Edwards moved over and clipped the back of the Aedas-backed driver breaking his left rear suspension and sending him into retirement. Edwards went on to finish fourth but was later excluded from the results for his part in the incident.

"I'm very disappointed, it's my last race in FPA and I wanted to finish on the podium at least and I think that would have been possible today," said Jonathan. "I had plenty of boost left and think I was the quickest out there but I was hit about four times at different places around the track; I think everyone was getting a bit desperate really. It's a disappointing end to the season I was really enjoying it up until Sam put me on the grass coming into La Source on the left hand side then he left the door open there on the next lap so I went for the gap. There was plenty of room but he just turned in on me and that was that. It's a disappointing end to the season."
