Jonathan storms to Spa pole.

With a performance that had the rest of the FPA paddock scratching their heads, Championship leader Jonathan Kennard backed up his dominant testing performance with a stunning lap in qualifying to take pole for tomorrow's Round 11 at Spa Francorchamps by almost a second. The 19 year-old who is currently 30 points clear of his nearest rival took it steady in the early stages of the session, with a token lap in anticipation of the weather turning, before settling down to the job in the hand over the last few laps.

After setting the pole time with 15 minutes remaining, he set about improving that each lap until he'd stretched the advantage to 0.955s clear of Rob Jenkinson, who will line up on the front row for the first of the weekend's two 30-minutes races. Rapid Russian Alexander Turumin was third quickest with Spa-expert, Belgian F3000 driver Loic Deman alongside him on the second row.

"It's a good position to be in," said Jonathan. "If it's dry or wet it doesn't really matter, but it's always good to be at the front and try and keep out of trouble and that's really what I've got to do this weekend. The flying lap was great, I was really committed especially into Eau Rouge and the other fast corners taking them all flat, and it all just came together. It was nice and smooth, the car's perfect, and if it is dry I've got a great car for the race and I can consistently do laps that are quick."

Qualifying for the weekend's second race will take place tomorrow at 09.00 with the Round 11 race taking place later in the day at 13.50.
