BRDC Rising Star and McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver finalist Jonathan Kennard finally ended weeks of speculation by confirming his plans to contest the Avon Tyres British Formula 3 National Class with established Alan Docking Racing. Following a successful test with the Silverstone-based outfit last year, the 19 year-old from Tunbridge Wells finally put pen to paper last week and will begin a rigorous testing programme with the Northamptonshire team next month.
With just two seasons of senior motor racing behind him, which culminated in the FPA Autumn Trophy in 2003 and the FPA Championship last year, the teenager goes into the year aiming for back-to-back titles but remains realistic of the task ahead. “This year's National Class looks to be very competitive with maybe ten drivers vying for the title. I'm looking forward to the challenge, I think it's good for a driver to face stiff competition and it's something I certainly learnt from last season.
“I feel I've settled into the Formula 3 car well, the tests we did at the end of the season seem to indicate that anyway although I'm well aware that the setting up of the car is a lot different to FPA where only minor changes were possible. Also qualifying looks to be a very important part of the race weekend as is getting the very best out of the tyres and the track conditions but I'm confident that I'll learn to adapt.â€
Alan Docking Racing, established in 1975 has won the F3 Championship three times, including most recently in 2002 with Robbie Kerr. An impressive list of drivers, including Mark Webber, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Mika Salo has come through the ADR camp and Jonathan is quick to praise his new team. “I'm really pleased to be racing with Alan and his team. Historically they've had a lot of success already and Alan himself raced successfully so he knows the score from inside and outside the car. I'm looking forward to racing with them and I'm sure we're going to get along well.â€
Jonathan's testing programme will commence on February 22nd in preparation for the opening rounds of the 22-round series at Donington Park on April 2nd/3rd.
