Jonathan Kennard took his fourth win in the Visma Software Formula Palmer Audi Championship with victory in Silverstone's Round 10 today. The 19 year-old series leader now has a thirty point lead in the championship over Rob Jenkinson with just two rounds remaining.
"It's amazing what a difference a day can make," said a delighted Kennard at the flag. "This is the biggest lead I've had in the championship all year and I'm delighted with today's result."
Starting from pole, he struggled with wheelspin off the line and briefly dropped to second behind Jenkinson before making a move for the lead at Stowe. As the pair entered the fast right hander Jonathan pulled alongside but was squeezed onto the grass when the two collided. With a bent steering arm, Jonathan was lucky to continue but Jenkinson, also with broken steering crashed on the entry to Abbey, his race over.
A lap later the safety car was deployed to remove Jenkinson's stricken car, leaving Kennard to regain the lead ahead of Loic Deman in second place and Sam Edwards in third.
The safety car was brought in at the end of lap six and Kennard made a good get-away from Deman on the rolling start. Deman closed the gap after Kennard ran wide on the entry of Stowe on lap eight and the pair ran nose to tail for half a lap. Despite coming under increasing pressure from the Belgian F3000 driver, the two often running side-by-side, Jonathan managed to maintain position.
By the end of lap nine Jonathan had eased away and started to open up a gap between himself and Deman as Sam Edwards started his fight for second place. With Demon dropping back further still on lap ten, Kennard was storming ahead and kept the lead to the end of the eleven lap race.
"The car bogged down slightly at the start, I didn't use enough revs and let the clutch out a bit sharp" said Jonathan. "I was second going into the first two corners then had a stab at getting past Jenkinson at Stowe, but he didn't leave me much room so we tangled. It was lucky that it was only the steering arm that got bent, but I didn't really know what the damage was as I was going round. After the safety car went in I made a good restart and held them off for the win".
